MCT Coconut Oil - what is it?
Medium-chain triglycerides, also known as MCTs, are a type of saturated fat often found in foods such as coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and dairy products. MCT molecules are smaller than those found in most fats we eat, meaning they are rapidly broken down and absorbed by our bodies. This makes MCT a quick energy source and less likely to be stored as fat as opposed to long-chain triglycerides, also known as LCT, that are found in most other foods. In addition to many claiming it can help promote weight loss, MCT oil has grown popular among athletes and bodybuilders.
The proportion and types of MCT molecules are the two main differences between coconut oil and MCT coconut oil. Coconut oil is the richest natural source of MCT, comprising around 54%. However, coconut oil also contains LCTs and unsaturated fats. MCT coconut oil contains 100% MCTs, making it a concentrated source. It's also important to note that it is man-made via a process called fractionation
